White-faced at Whixall 31st May

I'd been checking the BDS website regularly in the last week or so to see if any White-faced Darters had emerged. There hadn't been any reports and I thought that they surely must be out by now. We have a good friend who lives in Shropshire who fortunately only lives about half an hours drive from Whixall Moss NNR, so myself and Julie decided to combine a visit. We drove to Whixall first and then spent the afternoon at our friends house.

8+ White-faced darters were seen flying around a pool, mostly males but also 2 egg laying females and 1 teneral.
10+ Four spotted chasers were flying around also Azure and Large red damsels.

2 Curlew seen flying over calling.

  2. I fancy there could be an Oxonbirders expedition some time soon. I'm up for it, anyone else?

  3. Great photos. Am up in Oswestry this weekend, so planning on a Whixall Moss visit at some point. Will be parking just over the lift bridge by the canal, and then generally walk up onto the moss and then east. I assume the pool you mention is the smaller ones to the east of the big pool near the trees.

    1. Hi Stephen, I also parked here and then walked west along the canal for about 500m, I then entered the moss through the entrance on the right with the boardwalk and reserve sign. This entrance is just after the first entrance you come to while walking along canal. Cheers and good luck, Wayne.
